Twenty-six-year-old Brian Whitcher did not like homosexuals. He did a lot of boasting, but most of it didn’t come to fruition due to his constant need for a drink. He liked to haunt Burnside Avenue in southwest Portland, where his boasts weren’t worth a can of malt liquor at a dive bar or a night’s stay in one of the seedy hotels.

Burnside was Portland’s beer neighborhood, and that’s where Brian could be found most of the time. He preferred Rotten Robert’s and Terrible Terry’s when it came to local bars. Earl Davis, a friend of Brian’s, remembered him mentioning he was going to Rotten Robert’s the night he disappeared. Earl was a retired Army cook in his sixties who’d seen his fair share of downtime in Portland bars. He’d met Brian at a health club where they worked together for a short time a few years ago. Their relationship was closer to father/son rather than friends, and Earl would take Brian in as an occasional roommate despite his drug addiction. Earl was a drinking man, but he didn’t like drugs much.
